Maha shivaratri importance, celebrations, rituals

Maha Shivaratri is a very special festival in India, known for its unique rituals and night-long celebrations. Unlike other festivals, Shivaratri is observed during the night, making it truly one of a kind.

This year, in 2025, Maha Shivaratri falls on 26th February. The date and month of Shivaratri change every year as it is based on the lunar calendar. This adds a special significance to the festival, connecting it deeply to nature and cosmic cycles.

Significance of Maha Shivaratri

Shivaratri is a very important spiritual festival celebrated across India. According to ancient texts like the Linga Purana, Skanda Purana, and Padma Purana, this festival marks the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

It also signifies overcoming darkness and ignorance. Shivaratri is remembered for Lord Shiva performing the Tandava dance, known as Tripuranataka.

The festival is observed on the 14th day of the lunar month of Phalguna. Devotees celebrate it with fasting, meditation, and offering Abhishekam (ritual bathing) to Lord Shiva.
